We recently interviewed Henrik Jorgensen who is not only our Site Manager, but also a resident. In this video interview, Henrik shares with us the innovative geothermal heating system that has gone into the development at Spirit Bay.
Watch the video below:
At Spirit Bay, we believe in innovation as much as we aim to live more sustainably. Concepts like light on the land village design and hundred year construction – virtually unheard of in other new developments – are part of the parlance here.
It’s no surprise that we’re tapping the earth and ocean for our energy needs, too.
Our new geo / ocean thermal energy system does it with a combination of great innovation and tried and true concepts – the same concepts you’ll find in every refrigerator.
Here’s how geothermal energy works:
We draw water from the ocean (which maintains a stable temperature throughout the year), or pump water through pipes embedded deep in the earth. In the winter, our system absorbs the heat of the ocean water, or heat from the earth, then carries that heat to heat pumps where it’s concentrated and sent as warm, comfortable air to homes.
In the summer, the process works in reverse.
It may sound complex, but there are remarkably few ‘moving pieces’ that degrade or wear out – unlike typical oil or gas heating systems. And for residents, getting the room temperature right, no matter the dips or rises outdoors, is as simple as adjusting their thermostat.
And if you have any questions, drop by our Visitor Centre and book a viewing – the mechanical room that houses the ocean thermal system is right across the street!
