A Community Lending Library Becomes a New Gathering Place

    By Geoff Gosson | Sustainability | 0 comment | 18 December, 2019 | 2

A hub is born – a community update from resident, Rhonda Markel

There were approximately 20 people at the launch party of the Spirit bay community lending library. On December 14th we came together as a community to fill the shelves of our new library located beside the community garden. In early Spirit Bay days, residents dreamed of a place to gather and exchange books. Recently a wooden structure found on site was deemed to have potential for salvage. Rhonda and Shelley had it moved to Rhonda’s garage for upcycling. There it underwent a complete metamorphosis. Old windows found online were turned into doors and other materials were gathered and purchased to create this community gift.

Many hours were donated in the creation of this labour of love. It took a number of neighbours to move the library to and from its various locations. Willy was approached to add her folk art style for embellishment. She designed a whimsical villagescape that adorns the library. A bulletin board allows an old school method of communication amongst our community members. The vision of this library is to connect the larger community, young and old. We hope to continue building the relationship between new residents of Spirit Bay and our Scia’new neighbours.
